Miksi olla ihminen, jos ihmisenä olo on niin raskasta?
Ryhdy kadun lyhdyksi, jonka hehku hiljaa valaisee ihmisiä.
— Svetilka ob Cesti, Srečko Kosovel
Why be human if being human is so difficult?
Become the lamp by the roadside that quietly sheds its light on man.

Malgré notre misère,

Sensibles amateurs,
Avec peu de dépense
Soyez nos bienfaiteurs.

Inspite of our grief,
and consumed by pain,
we endure, for your relief,
the shame of the wind and rain.
Have indulgence,
sensible actors,
with a little expense
become our benefactors.

Good, bad, renewable, bourgeois.
Today (absurdly) unnecessary work continues to be imposed.
— We Want everything, Nanni Balestrini
Finally,
We are faced with this band of one, becoming a Union of Precarious Musicians. Attempting to balance and lead our little society.
It is not easy.
There is more and more inequity between the circles:
the conservative nostalgics,
the lone hearders and hermits, heralds of the new universal order, mystics and rejects cooking up an alternative history
and of course,
the highflyers
This is the spectacle we are assisting today. Balance and imbalance.
The continuation of the cycle.
— after We Want Everything, Nanni Balestrini
Ubi Calamari
A cantata
A growth-critical cantata
To promote the instatement of universal basic income
It is not easy.
There is more and more inequity between the circles

In the end, except
for the constant toil,
our lives know no
hardship.
Paitsi jatkuvaa
raatamista,
elämämme ei tunne
kärsimystä.
En fin de compte, a part
le labeur constant,
nos vies ne connaissent
pas d’épreuves.

Band of one – the personification of precarity
In Lauri Supponen’s debut album, precarity is personified in the character of Solsirépifpan, a band of one that sings a cantata to pro- mote the instatement of Universal Basic Income (UBI).
Solsirépifpan is an album born from the collaboration of Finnish composer Lauri Supponen and accordionist Harri Kuusijärvi, releasing on June 1st 2023. The music on the album is arranged from the four pieces of Lauri Supponen’s Union of Precarious Musicians -cycle, written in 2017- 18. Kuusijärvi has simultaneously developed his electronically extended accordion. The initial arrangement was edited and modified throughout the process, according to the development of Kuusijärvi’s instrument. The resulting album is also Supponen’s debut LP, published digitally as well as as on vinyl and CD, produced by Supponen’s own edition ’Äänitetuotanto OSK’. Previously published from the album are the double singles marcialonga (1.3.) and ubi calamari (1.4). The single solsirépifpan (1.5) is published a month before the album release.
BACKGROUND
Solsirépifpan was an acclaimed Parisian entertainer and one of the first modern bands-of-one. His attire and instrumentarium modified through decades of addition. The band-of-one of the album is an embodiment of precarity in the life of a musician. A union of precarious musicians of sorts, all in one body.
Already in 1840, Solsirépifpan sung a cantata of precarity, to a melody borrowed from Gluck;
Malgré notre misère
et navré de douleur
nous bravons pour vour plaire
la honte du malheur
Ayez de l’indulgence
Sensibles amateurs
Avec peu de dépense
Soyez nos bienfaiteurs
freely translated:
Inspite of our grief,
and consumed by pain,
we endure, for your relief,
the shame of the wind and rain.
Have indulgence,
sensible actors,
with a little expense
become our benefactors.
On the title track of the album, these words are uttered by Kuusijärvi, initiating him into this continuum of bands-of-one as Solsirépifpan’s successor.
ABOUT THE MUSIC
The album is a musical portrait of its namesake. The soundscape of a year in the life of a band-of-one. What they play. What they hear. Where they walk. What they eat. Who they meet. The opening track marcialonga measures endurance across three movements: in face of a marathon skiing competition (entrance), in face of a street in winter and at the factory. love heavy light streches an arch between the precarious dynamic created when our solitary protagonist encounters a potential love interest, both in a domestic setting (dinner with flies) and out about town (rendez vous). The title track solsirépifpan is a broken and melted accompaniment for our solitary protagonist who’d sometimes rather stay home.
ubi calamari is a parade of human and non-human animal encoun- ters, a growth-critical cantata to promote the instatement of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a solution for our cephalopodic, multi-tasking lives.
Solsirépifpan is a celebration of precarity in music. In the music of the album, precarity is the fragility of timbre. The chaotic act of sounding. The knife’s edge, that divides the now with the yet to come.
Solsirépifpan is a manifest of precarity in music. Precarity is the reality of a musician’s life in a society that eschews permanent employment and the security thereof. As mentioned above, the concluding cantata ubi calamari openly promotes the instatement of Universal Basic Income (UBI).
